How to get this photo – Oregon Coast

This photo is from the Oregon coast, at a state park about an hour north of Bandon.

Oregon has some really hard sand, so there’s always a thin layer of ocean water residing on top of it. This creates some really amazing reflections of the sunset, as pictured in this photo. The blue you see on the top of the photo is an ocean wave coming in.

There were two keys to getting this photo:

Get the camera really low to the ground. If you look at the sand while standing up, you’ll definitely see a reflection of the sunset, but it won’t be nearly as dramatic as what you’ll see if you crouch down and get lower to the ground.

Warning: be careful of the unpredictable tide of the Oregon coast! My boots got soaked the night I took this photo (it was worth it though, heh).

Wait until after sunset to take the photo. The really dramatic colors of a sunset usually don’t occur until well after the Sun actually sets. This is especially true when there’s cloudy skies. The photo above was taken about 20 minutes after sunset.
