Take Only Pictures, Leave Only Footprints

Now that we’re well into spring here in the northern hemisphere (and getting ready for summer), there’s lots of wildflowers in bloom. This is one of the best times of year for photography because the wildflowers also bring a lot of other cool stuff to photograph (such as butterflies and other insects).

With so many exciting subjects, sometimes it’s easy to forget that this is also one of the most fragile times of year for the natural world. So, it’s important to “leave no trace” when you’re out on the trail.

Leaving no trace means you leave the wilderness just as you found it (or maybe a little better by picking up any trash you find). It means the only thing you take away is photographs, and the only thing you leave behind is footprints. But, you should also be careful just where you leave those footprints.

To ensure you leave no trace, here are a few guidelines to follow when you’re out on a trail: [Read more…] about Take Only Pictures, Leave Only Footprints

Things To Consider When Buying Used Camera Gear

October 30, 2013 by Amy Cobb 3 Comments

This is a guest post by Amy Cobb, from Photography Colleges
There are many reasons to opt for a pre-owned camera as opposed to a new one. The fact that a camera once had a relationship with another photographer doesn’t necessarily mean that it was misused, abused, or made defective—chances are, the previous owner is upgrading to a newer model, or coming to grips with the fact that film is becoming obsolete outside of art photography.

This is good news if you’re studying photography at your university and looking to play with film or a lightly-used DSLR that has no desire to take out additional student loans to cover a prohibitively pricey “book,” or if you’re a professional looking for an adequate backup camera.

While there’s different things to consider when evaluating used digital and film cameras, many of the basics are the same. Keep in mind that you should be extremely careful about purchasing a camera you can’t take a test shot with, and always at least ask for a warranty. Red Rock in Utah / Photos by Steve Berardi
Red Rock in Utah / Photos by Steve Berardi

Which of the two photos above do you like better? Why?

Both photos are very similar, but one was shot at sunrise and one was shot at sunset, so different parts of the red rock were lit up by the sun.

There’s no right or wrong answer here. The reason I’m asking the question is to get you thinking about composition, and specifically help you think about your own unique perspective of the world. [Read more…] about Which Photo Do You Like Better?
