New Issue of Fotozaar Now Available!

February 10, 2014 by Steve Berardi Leave a Comment

Fotozaar - Issue 3Today I’m happy to announce that the third issue of Fotozaar is now available. It contains twenty incredible photographs from a wide variety of photographers, along with detailed explanations of how each image was made.

You may remember hearing about Fotozaar last year, when I released the first issue.

The idea for this series of ebooks was inspired by my strong belief that one of the best ways to learn something is by example. As Albert Einstein put it, “Learning by example isn’t the best way to learn. It’s the only way to learn.” [Read more…] about New Issue of Fotozaar Now Available!

Fotozaar - Volume 2Today I’m happy to announce that the second volume of Fotozaar is now available. It contains twenty incredible photographs from a wide variety of photographers, along with detailed stories about how each image was made.

You may remember hearing about Fotozaar a few months ago, when I released the first volume. It’s a side project I’ve been working on since the beginning of the year, and I’m excited to release another volume.

The idea for this series of ebooks was inspired by my strong belief that one of the best ways to learn something is by example. As Albert Einstein put it, “Learning by example isn’t the best way to learn. It’s the only way to learn.” [Read more…] about Learn by Example In The New eBook From Fotozaar

Learn The Secrets Behind Incredible Photos

June 2, 2013 by Steve Berardi 3 Comments

FotozaarHave you ever seen an incredible photo and wondered: how on earth did the photographer create that image?

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, the photographer will share what settings they used on their camera (such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO).

But, as I’m sure you know, this kind of information only begins to tell the story of how the image was made. What you really want to know is stuff like: how the composition was chosen, what the lighting conditions were like, what kind of special equipment was needed, or what inspired the photographer to create the image.

Unfortunately, photographers rarely share this kind of detailed information.

Well, today I’m super excited to announce a new solution to this problem: [Read more…] about Learn The Secrets Behind Incredible Photos

Do You Refactor Your Photographs?

September 13, 2011 by Steve Berardi 17 Comments

cholla cactusAs a software developer, one of the things I do every day is refactor code. I’ll write some code to solve a problem, test it out to make sure it works, and then I’ll take another look at the code and see if there’s a way to make it more clear or more efficient. Then, of course, I’ll test it again 😉

Writers do this too. First, they’ll write a basic draft of their story to cover the main ideas, and then they’ll read it over and over again to make the words flow better and to make their message stand out more.

But, what about photographers? Do you ever take a look at one of your photos and say something like, “wow, I really like this photo of mine, but I wish one thing was different”? It doesn’t have to be something big, it could even be something as simple as moving your camera one step to the left so a tree stands out more from the background. I received a lot of positive feedback the last time I discussed one of my “bad photos,” so it was easy for me to decide to continue these types of posts.

This time I want to talk about a photo I took last weekend while camping in the Mojave Desert. I intentionally picked this weekend because of the full moon–I was hoping to catch a few glorious moonrises and moonsets.

The first night I was there, I shot this photo a few minutes before sunset: [Read more…] about What went wrong with this sand dune photo?
