Keeping on pace with my last post regarding external flash units, I’ve decided to show you one of my “do-it-yourself” (DIY) projects: building an external flash bracket. Having the majority of my lenses fitted with the same quick-release plates, this flash bracket mounts to all of them with ease and full versatility. Check it out:

Benefits of Using a Flash Extender
Note from the editor (Steve): This is a post by our newest writer: Robert Visconti. He primarily photographs wildlife (especially birds), and he’s got some really cool ideas for DIY projects and optimizing your camera gear. In this post, he talks about using flash extenders and how to make one work better.
A flash extender is just that: it extends the flash’s output to a much greater distance by using a Fresnel lens. A flash without the extender literally “floods” the entire subject area with light. The extender takes this conical shape of light and concentrates it into a beam, hence its name. [Read more…] about Benefits of Using a Flash Extender
What To Do When Your Memory Card Fails
In a previous post, I talked about a few ways to avoid memory card problems. But, even if you follow all those tips, you’re bound to get a corrupt memory card someday.
Unfortunately, technology doesn’t always work 🙁
So, what do you do when you get home with a memory card full of awesome photos and your computer refuses to read it?
Well, there’s a few simple things you can try, like using another memory card reader or another computer. But, after that, your best option is to try using some data recovery software.
As a software developer, I’ve spent a lot of time recovering data from corrupt hard drives and flash drives, so here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way: [Read more…] about What To Do When Your Memory Card Fails
How to Photograph Wildflowers with Flash
Note from Steve: This is a guest post written by Rob Neave, of Perth, Western Australia. In this post he talks about an interesting technique for photographing wildflowers with flash.
As always, if youʼre also interested in writing a guest post, please feel free to contact me. Thanks!
________
My state of Western Australia is wildflower central for the known universe. For years, I was entranced by their potential as photographic subjects, but could not figure out how to do it. Eventually I bought a book called “Field Photography” by Alfred A Blaker, which showed me how to get decent shots of wildflowers.
Although the techniques presented in Blaker’s book were originally written for film photography, I have been able to also apply them to digital photography and ETTL flash.
The photo above is an example of what you’ll be able to do with these techniques. The flowers in the photo are Blue Lechenaultia. This image shows the detail and depth of field (DOF) we can get with these techniques. It was shot at f/32 and 1/200 with flash. [Read more…] about How to Photograph Wildflowers with Flash
